The wiring is damaged. You re not crazy those lights did work last year. Start by checking for a blown fuse a common problem with a quick and easy fix.
When working correctly there is a wire shunt in the string that bypasses each of the individual light bulb sockets. Some christmas light testers work by having you slide each christmas light bulb through a hole. There is a chance the shunt wires in the light string are faulty. This can be caused by aging tugging too hard during installation or storing or by chewing animals.
This is especially true if only a section of your lights has gone out and none of the bulbs are missing. There are several ways to repair your lights depending on the problem and how hands on you re willing to get.
